Backpack
Program-Sally Brown
Sally
welcomed representatives from Bath United Methodist Church (UMC),
Good Shepard Food Bank and the Bath Food Bank; Kathy, Brenda, Laurie,
and Darryl.
There
will be an upcoming press release for the backpack program at DNS.
Good
Shepard runs two in school food programs for students with chronic or
situational hunger which operate in addition to traditional school
and SNAP programs.
The
backpack program is a nationwide campaign providing weekly bags with
shelf stable meals and snacks. Each bag includes; 1 family meal, a
breakfast, fruit and vegetable snacks, and a healthy newsletter
including, games, recipes and nutritional information.
Bath
UMC will need assistance to pack the bags and bring to DNS for 40-50
students weekly and on school vacations.
The
programs goal is to reduce hunger and increase nutrition for children
in Bath.
Bath
UMC got involved upon learning that two of four children in Bath face
food insecurity, raising $10,000 to start the program in December.
The
cost to Good Shepard is $225 per student for the year, currently 42
students are funded.
We
are looking for volunteers to pack bags. A one month supply will be
delivered to the UMC and needs to be sorted into weekly bags.
There
will be no identifying information for students.
The
first delivery to UMC will be late Tuesday November 11th. Ross
Berkowitz mentioned JMG and the Interact Club may be interested in
volunteering.
All
donations should be made at Bath Savings. Checks should be made
payable to Bath Savings for the Back Pack Program Account.
